Biography
Tenor Camron Gray is a native of Winchester, Tennessee who has performed solo recitals, concert repertoire, and opera across the United States since 2010. As a soloist in recent years audiences have heard Mr. Gray at Michigan Opera Theatre as Police Buddy #1 in Blue (a role Mr. Gray originated at The Glimmerglass Festival in 2019), Opera Naples as Scalia in Scalia/Ginsburg (2020), and The University of Michigan-Ann Arbor as Rodolfo in Puccini’s La Bohème.
Mr. Gray has been awarded and recognized with various scholarships such as being a District Finalist in the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions (2018) and was a Albert Rees Davis Scholar from the S. Livingston Mather Scholarship Competition in Cleveland, OH (2017). He has also performed as an ensemble member in Show Boat with The Glimmerglass Festival, Wagner’s Der Fliegende Holländer and Bilodeau’s Another Brick in the Wall with Cincinnati Opera (2018), and various bit roles in performances at the University of Michigan (U-M). He completed both his Master of Music in Vocal Performance (2018) and the Specialist of Music Degree in Vocal Performance (2021) from the School of Music, Theatre & Dance (SMTD) at U-M.
During his time at U-M, he debuted roles such as Tom Snout in Benjamin Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream (2017), Larry Renault in William Bolcomb’s Dinner at Eight (2017), Robbins and Crab Man in the authoritative, fully-revised score of The Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess (2018), El Gobernador in Bernstein’s Candide (2018), and as Rodolfo in La Bohème (2019), Puccini’s beloved romantic tragedy. Throughout his studies at U-M, and prior at Tennessee Tech University (B.M. in Mus.Ed./B.A. in Spanish, 2014), Mr. Gray has participated in workshops and concerts for new works, Goldovsky-based stagecraft, and choral ensembles. In 2018, Mr. Gray was fortunate to be a part of the ensemble assembled by the Toledo Symphony with world-renowned soprano, Kathleen Battle, in concert.
During the 2021-2022 Season one can find Camron singing as “Police Buddy #1” in Blue at Seattle Opera and Toledo Opera (2022) and as Nemorino in L’Elisir d’Amore, the timeless, romantic classic opera by Donizetti, with Opera Huntsville (2022). This holiday season he will also join the Motor City Lyric Opera in “Christmas Classics in the D” program in Detroit, MI.
Mr. Gray is a passionate singer, speaker, educator, and life-long student both on and off stage. He has studied and taught a variety of subject areas such as K-12 music, voice, acting, language acquisition, public speaking & presentation, and served as an artistic consultant for Diversity, Equity & Inclusion in opera.
